Nine police trainees killed in Lahore ,Pakistan

LAHORE: Armed gunmen stormed a building in Ichra here on Thursday, killing police prison trainees.

This was the second such incident in past three days in which security personnel were targeted in Punjab, police sources said.

According to police officials, the attackers were riding three motorcycles and a car. Police said that the "same gang" that killed seven security personnel at an army camp in Gujrat had carried out the pre-dawn attack.

All of the victims belonged to the Jails Department of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and lived in a rented building in the Rasool Park in the densely populated Ichra area.

The deceased were identified as Khudai Noor, Shafqat Rizwan, Qamaruz Zaman, Sharifuddin, Muhammad Ali, Muhammad Fayyaz, Sardar Khan, Azmat Janan and Asif s/o Jehangir who died at Services Hospital.

Injured trainees include Asad s/o Abdul Salam, Jafar s/o Maroof, Nazar s/o Raza Khan, Ayaz s/o Abdul Raqeeb, Shareefullah s/o Ezat Khan, Muhammad Rizwan s/o Sarbuland, Haleemullah s/o Mehmoodul Hassan and Amir s/o Alam Sher.

Police sealed off the building and cordoned off the area after the attack.

Inspector-General of Police, Punjab, Haji Habibur Rehman inspected the crime scene and visited the injured at the Services Hosptial here.

Condemning the attack and terming it an act of blatant terrorism, Habibur Rehman said that the attackers were armed with Kalashnikov rifles and hand-grenades and were riding three motorcyles and a car.

They stormed the building where at least 35 police and prison staff were sleeping.

"All defunct organisations are closely cooperating with each other to carry out attacks against security forces," Rehman added.

He also constituted a committee to prepare a comprehensive report in this regard.

Pakistani Taliban have reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack.
